Ten Do-It-Yourself Steps To Installing A Window Unit

When many people think about installing a window unit, they feel overwhelmed by the thought of such a task. The truth is, if you follow a few easy steps, installing a window unit can be an easy do-it-yourself project for almost anyone. If you would like to learn how to install a window unit without having to pay a professional, follow these ten easy steps.

An easy way to determine how many BTU’s you will need is to go by square feet of the room. For every 500 square feet you want to cool, make sure your unit produces 12,000 BTU’s.  

The first thing you should do when installing a window unit is to measure the space you will be cooling before you purchase anything. The last thing you want is to buy and install a window unit and find that it doesn’t get the job done, so make sure you find the most efficient A/C unit for your needs. All window units are rated by their British Thermal Unit capacity (BTU). An easy way to determine how many BTU’s you will need is to go by square feet of the room. For every 500 square feet you want to cool, make sure your unit produces 12,000 BTU’s.

After you have a good idea of the type of window unit you will need, you will want to measure the space you have in available in the window. All units are sized differently, so you will want to make sure your measurements are as accurate as possible before you make any purchases.

Install mounting brackets before you try to put the window unit in place. Usually, your window unit will come with the appropriate mounting brackets needed, but you will want to check before you get started. If you require any additional instructions on how to install the mounting brackets, you can always consult your owner’s manual.

Put the window unit in place and attach it securely onto the mounting brackets. Again, each window unit may be different, so it’s always a good idea to read your manual carefully to ensure proper installation of your window unit.

After you have the window unit properly mounted, slide the window down as securely as possible against the top of the unit.

Next, look for the window attachments located on the window unit and attach them to the window frame.

The next step is to take a piece of foam and place it into the leftover space between the top of the window unit and the window. Sometimes the manufacturer may provide this, but you will want to check before you begin installation.

If a drainage hose is needed or supplied by the manufacturer, you will need attach it securely to the outside of the window unit.

Use caulk to seal up and eliminate any remaining space between the unit and the window. Not only does this help to keep the warm air out, it also gives you a more energy efficient A/C unit.

The last step is to plug in the window unit and make sure it is running properly. If you experience any problems, go back and make sure you have completed every step. If needed, you can consult your owner’s manual for troubleshooting tips.
